A simple dance competition created by three South American dancers in Argentina, has become bigger than anyone could have imagined. Instagram has become the platform for this competition where competitors can post clips of their sweet dance moves.

A panel of professional dance experts will judge the competitors and the viewers can vote by liking their video. Whether you are a professional dancer or just a young person dancing the night away during lock-down, this competition welcomed everyone worldwide from Italy to Brazil. The top prize is $150 and a feature on the ‘Stay at home dance competition’ instagram page. But for many of the participants, the real prize is being able to get back on the stage even if it is only virtually for the time being.

This competition was made to be an outlet for dancers interpreting their thoughts and feelings during  the Coronavirus pandemic. It is especially important because of how hard the dance industry has been negatively impacted by the social distancing measures. Theatres have closed down, dancing troupes have dispersed because they cannot perform so close together, and dance companies have lost money due to the pandemic. This competition is an expressive way to raise awareness about the Coronavirus while having fun.

One host from the competition, Argentine Facundo Luqui, stated, “We were struck by the desire of participants to be seen, to express themselves and their dance, what is happening to them at the moment.” The competition ended on Sunday and you can view the winners of the challenge here
