When Sonya Curry and her husband, Dell Curry, launched the innovative podcast Raising Fame: Sports Edition, their aim was to delve into the life stories of star athletes, with a unique twist-they would hear these stories directly from the athletes’ parents.
Past podcast guests include Julie Thompson, Klay Thompson’s mother, and Robin Paul, Chris Paul’s mother.
Now, with the collaboration of Lucille O’Neal, Shaquille O’Neal’s mother, and TV One, Raising Fame has evolved into a televised series.
The show offers a personal and intimate look into the lives of famous celebrity parents, as Sonya Curry and Lucille O’Neal visit their homes, experience their environment, and engage in heartfelt conversations.
The premiere of the series was a grand affair, held at the prestigious The Standard Hotel in New York City. TV One and Us Weekly hosted an exclusive evening, inviting attendees and media to a private gathering with the two basketball titan mothers. The Link Entertainment was privileged to be in attendance and have the opportunity to speak to the hosts of the show.
Both women are mothers to basketball powerhouses, and each spoke candidly about whether or not they had to make any sacrifices in their personal lives for their children’s careers.
Lucille O’Neal mentioned that she did have to make sacrifices of both time and money, but that “it was all for the benefit of him and it was all for good.”
On the other hand, Sonya Curry went on to say that she didn’t sacrifice anything.
“I really didn’t have to sacrifice anything. I just really got up everyday and just tried to be very intentional about parenting them and raising them to first love God, and then second to… you know be responsible for the family unit and the roles that they all play.” Sonya added that she wanted her children to go out and be the best version of themselves that they could be everyday.
Some of the guests included in the series are the parents of late actor Chadwick Boseman, Primetime Emmy and Tony Award winner Billy Porter and his parents, and the twelve-time Grammy Award winner John Legend and his parents.
Raising Fame will premiere on TV One on Sunday, July 7, at 10PM ET.
