The month of October is Cybersecurity Awareness month.

As individuals navigate the World Wide Web, many remain unaware of the risks associated with having accounts that contain personal information, leaving them vulnerable to hacking and theft.

In 2023, the Federal Bureau of Investigation received over 800,000 complaints of online scams from the American public, resulting in potential losses exceeding $12.5 billion.

With these threats showing no sign of slowing down, it’s crucial to discuss ways to stay safe online—not only for your own protection but for those around you.

Tip 1: Safe and secure passwords

When setting up an account on websites like Google, Facebook, or Instagram, you’re asked to create a unique password known only to you. However, online hackers sometimes have the capability to guess the passwords you’ve created. One way to prevent this is by creating passwords with at least 12 characters. Additionally, avoid using the same password for each of your accounts.

Sidebar for passwords: Don’t be afraid to use a password manager. Its sole purpose is to securely store and remember your passwords, keeping them safe from online leaks.

Tip 2: Use multi-factor authentication

Multi-factor authentication is a security measure where a website or app requires two forms of verification to access your account. This might involve using a password and a Face-ID scan or entering a code sent via text message. This is a reliable way to keep your accounts secure and protected.

Tip 3: Always update your software

When it comes to updating your devices such as your phone and computer, it may come off as an annoying task. However, it may be the definitive factor on whether or not your information can be hacked. Regular software updates ensure you have the latest security patches, making it harder for hackers to access your personal data.

These are just three ways to protect your information from being hacked or sold on the black market. So, the next time you’re online, remember to use these tips and more to stay safe.
