Pastor Shirley Caesar, a graduate of Shaw University, will be given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2025 HBCU Honors.

Caesar has been impacting the world through song and messages of faith for more than 60 years, landing her the title of “First Lady of Gospel.”

Over the years, Caesar has released more than 40 albums, earned 11 GRAMMY Awards, and received the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award for her trailblazing contributions to gospel music.

Caesar continues to spread the word and music of God at Mount Calvary Word of Faith Church in Durham, North Carolina where she serves as the senior pastor.

The 2025 HBCU Honors returns Thanksgiving weekend with a powerful celebration of Black excellence, leadership, and legacy hosted by Emmy-nominated actress, comedian, producer and proud Fisk University alumna, Kym Whitley.

“This show is a joyful reminder of everything our schools represent — faith, excellence, community, and legacy. Thanksgiving weekend is the perfect time to celebrate what we’re thankful for: the people and institutions that continue to build Black excellence, generation after generation,” said Whitley.

HBCU Honors will also celebrate David Banner who will receive the Cultural Impact Award and Janice Bryant Howroyd who will receive the Visionary Founder Award.
