The oh so talented Viola Davis is coming to a screen near you in a new film capturing the life of Blues singer Gertrude “Ma” Rainey. Davis gave fans a sneak peek of her transformation on Instagram.
The actress is known for a variety of roles ranging from a powerful criminal defense professor on the TV show, “How to Get Away with Murder” to a local maid in the award-winning movie, “The Help.”
The film will be produced by Denzel Washington with a cast full of familiar faces including Michael Potts, Glynn Turman, and the late Chadwick Boseman who tragically passed away from colon cancer in August.
Davis shares how she prepared for the role in an interview with The New York Times. “I reveled in her, I swished my hips every day. There was such joy in that freedom of expression,” said Davis.
We can’t wait to see a different side of Davis in this film that is sure to deliver all the rhythm and blues we need.
Netflix is set to release the film on December 18.
