Third time’s a charm because Joseph ‘Joe’ Biden has been selected the United States 46th president along with our first Black female Vice President Kamala Harris.
Although Joe Biden is one of our oldest presidents to be elected at 77, Biden plans to make an effort to restore political normalcy and a spirit of national unity to confront raging health and economic crises.
History is continuing to be made because Biden will be the first presidential candidate to receive over 74 million votes in a presidential election.
Biden pledges to “to rebuild the soul of America, to rebuild the backbone of this nation, the middle class and to make America respected around the world again,” and stated that he does not see blue states and red states, but only the United States.
Along with making history, Biden’s wife Jill Biden will become the only first lady to work a paid job outside the White House and to have a doctorate degree. Dr. Jill Biden plans to continue teaching at her full-time job as an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College.
“If we get to the White House, I’m gonna continue to teach… It’s important, and I want people to value teachers and know their contributions, and lift up the profession,” Jill Biden says.
Kamala Harris is the daughter of an Indian and Jamaican immigrant and continues to inspire girls. “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities” spoke V.P. Kamala Harris. With Kamala’s name meaning “lotus” which is the empowerment of women, she plans to continue making history.
Vice President Kamala Harris ran a thoughtful campaign based on unity and honor and proceeds to continue the fight for the rights of all communities. She previously introduced and cosponsored legislation to raise wages for working people, reform our broken criminal justice system, make healthcare a right for all Americans, address the epidemic of substance abuse, support veterans and military families, and expand access to childcare for working parents.
Husband of Harris, Douglas Emhoff, is the first second gentleman of the United States of America. Emhoff is an entertainment attorney and a partner at DLA Piper, a global law firm. Throughout the campaigning and election, Douglas put in a leave of absence from the firm to support his wife in her endeavors.
This next presidency will come with many firsts. We can expect 2021 to be one for the history books.
