WNBA free agents can now sign contracts, however you may not see Seattle Storm’s veteran Sue Bird sign the deal that day. Even though she is not leaving the team, a source told ESPN.
Bird, will be returning to the team, where she has played her entire career, almost a span of 18 years.
Bird is awaiting the Seattle salary cap to be modified.
Diana Taurasi, who has played guard for the past 16 years for the Phoenix Mercury has re- signed a multiyear deal with the team. Due to Phoenix’s cap not being as restrictive which allows Taurasi to move forward with the deal.
Historically over the years the WNBA have taken less money, which in return helps them keep other talent on the team– this now has eyebrows raised and questioning: Does the WNBA need its own expectation to the salary cap?
This would give the players like Bird and Taurasi the ability to sign deals that may go over the salary cap.

In a statement released by Bird stating “ It’s no secret how I feel about the city of Seattle and the Storm franchise. I am a lifer and to be able to re- sign is extremely exciting. I am looking forward to getting back on the court with my teammates, and playing in front of our amazing fans.”
Bird who is now 40, was chosen as the No. 1 draft pick in 2002 from Connecticut. This 11 time All Star has won four WNBA titles along with four Olympic gold medals. Bird will be back for another season, and may prompt pivotal changed within the WNBA for other to come.
