American journalist Brent Renaud was killed by Russian forces on Sunday in the Ukrainian city of Irpin. His reporting partner, Juan Arredondo, was also wounded as they were traveling to film refugees.

In a tweet, the Kyiv region police identified the dead man as Renaud due to finding his American passport and a photo of his New York Times press badge. The police had also posted a photo of his body.

Andriy Nebitov, the head of the Kyiv region police, confirmed in a Facebook post that Renaud was shot by the Russian forces.

“Of course, journalism carries risks, but the US citizen Brent Renaud paid with his life for an attempt to shed light on how underhand, cruel, and merciless the aggressor is,” said Nebitov.

Arredondo took to Instagram with a video of him explaining how the shooting took place. He explained how they were shot in a car while going to film civilians that were fleeing.

Time Studios executives released a statement stating that Renaud was on assignment for their studio.

We are devastated by the loss of Brent Renaud,” stated Time Studios. “As an award-winning filmmaker and journalist, Brent tackled the toughest stories around the world often alongside his brother Craig Renaud.”

According to CNN, Renaud happens to be the first foreign journalist known to be killed in the current war in Ukraine.
