San Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard finds a silver lining in a win against the Arizona Cardinals, as it comes at the one year anniversary of his brother’s death.

Just a year ago on December 21, 2019, C.J.’s younger brother Clayton was stabbed to death outside of a bar in Nashville, Tennessee. Coincidentally, that same time this year he received a call that he will be starting against the Cardinals.

On Saturday, Beathard supported his lead running back Jeff Wilson Jr. during a defensive play which helped the team win a clean score of  20-12 vs. Arizona in the State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

After the game during an interview Beathard explained the impact of the game, “ It means more than I can really put into words. Everything that I’ve been through the last year and it being the year anniversary of my brother passing, it’s just one of those things that you can’t really put it into words. … You can’t write a script any different. I couldn’t handpick this to go the way it did.”

The 27 year old quarterback was consumed by emotions as he reflected on the challenging year he has been through. However, he used the anniversary and win to help with his grieving process. Beathard shocked fans with an obvious haircut on the anniversary of his brother’s tragic death.

Coach Kyle Shanahan of the 49ers had mentioned that for an entire year Beathard had not shaved his head, and questioned why he decided to shave it for this game. Beathard’s response to that was “ I have been growing it out because my brother liked his hair long so I wanted to keep it going for him.”

Once realizing that his hair cut was apart of his healing process stating, “I was like, alright, it’s been a year now so I can cut it.'”

During the press conference viewers saw Beathard’s new haircut and on him, he wore a black jacket with the word “King” designed vertically on the right side, and on the left there was a picture of Clayton. Beathard received this as a gift from his brother’s pastor from when he went to college at Long Island University. When he received it he was overwhelmed with tears.

Even though the start to his career he was always in the number two spot, as of now he definitely made an unbelievable mark on his team even through this tough time in San Francisco.

The 49ers will take on the Seattle Seahawks for a final time on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021.
