Budweiser, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo won’t be airing commercials during the 2021 super bowl

As we hit a new year, the super bowl is here.  The Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will  face off in the Super Bowl, shocking news has been released for this year’s advertising companies.

American Companies, such as Budweiser, Coca-Cola, and Pepsi, have decided to not air commercials during the Super Bowl. As the coronavirus pandemic continues, many companies are choosing to not participate in the 2021notorious commercials.

Budwieser is backing out of their advertising this year, to put towards and raise awareness for covid guidelines and vaccines. The beer producer hasn’t missed a Super Bowl in 37 years. And with a 30-second commercial costing $5.5 million to air during Super Bowl LV, Anheuser-Busch said the money was better spent elsewhere.

Monica Rustgi, Budweiser vice president of marketing stated, “To do this, and to bring consumers back into neighborhood bars and restaurants that were hit exceptionally hard by the pandemic, we’re stepping in to support critical awareness of the COVID-19 vaccine.”

PepsiCo gave up their 5.6 million advertising spot to focus their attention on the Super Bowl halftime show, which The Weeknd is headlining. Instead of buying a traditional 30-second in-game Super Bowl ad, they decided to double down on the 12 minutes Pepsi already has in the middle of the game.  However, the brand will still advertise some of its other products like Mountain Dew and Frito-Lay products. 

Coca-Cola brand has decided to withdraw from advertising as well, about 5.6 million saved by the company will go towards “investing in the right resources during these unprecedented  times,” according to an interview with Variety. 

Super Bowl LV, between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs, will air on CBS on Feb. 7. It will still be the game of the year, minus a few classic commercials.
