The 2021 Soul Train Awards, presented by BET aired Sunday night highlighting the music of great artists with powerful performances.

The annual event was hosted by Tichina Arnold and Tisha Campbell at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York to celebrate the best in African-American culture, music and entertainment.

The award show featured performances by Silk Sonic’s Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, Ari Lennox, Lucky Daye, Fred Hammond, Tone Stitch, Musiq Soulchild, Ashanti, Leon Bridges, ELHAE, Summer Walker and Maxwell.

Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak kicked off the show performing “Fly as Me” and “Smokin Out the Window” where they later took home song of the year and video of the year for their first single, “Leave The Door Open.”

Normani won her first award for Best Dance Performance. Jazmine Sullivan also received major recognition, taking home the Album of the Year award for her latest project “Heaux Tales” and being named best R&B/soul female artist. The soulful singer gave an honest acceptance speech admitting she was uncomfortable but made a promise to herself she wouldn’t hide anymore.

Ashanti was honored with the Lady of Soul Award where she took the stage with performances of her greatest hits including “Baby,” “Happy,” “Always On Time,” “The Way That I Love You,” and more.

To close out the night, Maxwell was also honored with the Living Legend Award and he didn’t disappoint with his biggest hits during the ceremony. The legendary singer thanked visionary Don Cornelius and the R&B community during his acceptance speech.

The bar has now been set pretty high and there’s no telling what next year’s award show will bring.
