Recently, almost 17 Historically Black Colleges and Universities have received unsettling bomb threats directed towards their campus.

The threats began on Monday, January 31, and according to the New York Times, Delaware State University, Southern University, and several other HBCUs were targeted. The following Tuesday 10 additional HBCUs had received bomb threats.

White House press secretary, Jen Psaki said in a news release that they are “in touch with the interagency partners, including federal law enforcement leadership.”

According to FOX5, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are currently investigating the recent threats.

Many of these schools held classes remotely while searching their campus for any potential threats. At least five schools, including Delaware State University, Kentucky State University, Howard University, and Jackson State University have issued ‘all clear’ statements to their students.

None of these bomb threats have proven to be credited according to New York Times, but staff, students, and faculty are heavily affected by these extreme claims.

A student from Xavier University in New Orleans, Anieya Green, told New York Times “myself along with other peers are feeling targeted,” when asked about the recent threats made towards her school.

Many believe that the threats made to these historically Black institutions are racially motivated. Some of these universities have faced multiple bomb threats throughout this year.

Tiara Sanker, a student from Hinds Community College told the New York Times, “For us to be targeted like this, it makes me angry and hurt that this is still happening,” she went on to say that it “ mentally, it hurts, too.”

In a letter, the Chief of Police at Howard University, told students and staff that these threats were “a drain on institutional and municipal resources and an unnecessary mental burden on individuals trying to learn and work on our campus.”

The bomb threats are currently under investigation.
