Tennis player, Naomi Osaka trains and competes on the court for long hours outside, mainly enduring  the sun on her skin. Little did Osaka know those long hours in the sun was damaging her skin. Now Osaka plans to help others take care of their skin with her new skincare product line.

Osaka said the brand will be named Kinló, which is in honor of her Japanese and Haitian roots–‘kin’ means ‘gold’ in Japanese, ‘ló’ means ‘gold’ in Haitian Creole, which will drop during the southern hemisphere autumn.

Kinlò will launch in fall of 2021 and the line will offer a range of five products including an SPF40+ tinted moisturizer and 50+ sunscreen for outdoor activities (though if released in Australia, the SPF rating may change given the nation’s rigorous testing of sunscreen). Her product line will also include spray, lip balm, and an eye cream.

“This is a public-health need. I used to tell people that I didn’t need to wear sunscreen — but even if you have melanin, you need to take care of your skin, and I am passionate about that,” Osaka said.

Osaka and the Kinlò team partnered with Dr. Naana Boakye, MD, a dermatologist with experience treating darker, melanin-rich skin tones, to ensure that the product formulations address the needs of the underserved Black-sunscreen consumers such as the white cast left on darker skin.

“What drew me toward this project is having memories of being a kid and not knowing how to protect my skin… I only started wearing sunscreen recently,” she said, while revealing she will be stepping into the role of CEO of the brand.

Osaka’s brand is much needed and we look forward to the beauty brand’s launch.
