Sydney McLaughlin sets world record in 400 hurdles alongside Dalilah Muhammad finishing Silver

Sydney McLaughlin, 21 year-old, from New Jersey took home the gold medal for the highly anticipated women’s 400m hurdles in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Right behind her finishing silver was another USA Olympian, Dalilah Muhammad.
“Iron sharpening iron,” McLaughlin called the latest in her series of showdowns with Muhammad, each one faster than the last. “Every time we step on the track, it’s always something fast.”
Starting in Lane 7, McLaughlin beat her own world record to win the highly anticipated race and secure her first Olympic medal. She cleared 10 hurdles at 17 miles-per-hour and finished almost half a second off her previous world record in the 2016 Rio Games with 51.46 seconds.
McLaughlin broke that record earlier this summer at Olympic trials, running 51.9 to become the first woman to crack 52 seconds.
Muhammad, who is a New York City native, earned herself a silver with the time of 51.58 seconds. Femke Bol of the Netherlands came in third at 52.03.
“No mixed emotions,” Muhammad said. “Sure, there are always things you want to do better. But you use this as a springboard to the next. This is not my last race.”
Both ladies bought home a medal where its proof that no matter the journey anything is possible.
