The Urban One Honors Awards premiered on MLK Day, January 17th, 2022. Urban One Honors was hosted by singer Ne-Yo and presented by TV One. The theme of the fourth annual awards show was “The Sound Track of Black America.” Many were honored and living legends graced the stage to perform songs that paved the way for so many in music today. Among those honored was Gospel singer, Tasha Cobbs Leonard, as she received the ‘Inspiration Impact Award.’

Cobbs-Leonard shared with TV One about the road that led to where she is today, which has all been God orchestrated. The gospel singer grew up in a small city called Jesup located in Georgia. She comes from a family of singers in which she got her start singing at her family’s church. In 2006 Cobbs-Leonard, took her gifts to dReam Center Church in Atlanta where she held the position of Worship Minister for 14 years.

After pursuing music beyond the church Cobbs-Leonard received success from her album “Smile,” and then her album “Grace,” produced by gospel singer VaShawn Mitchell. Soon thereafter her hit single “Break Every Chain” topped the charts and as a result she won three Dove Awards, three Stellar Awards, and a Grammy.

Cobbs-Leonard and her husband Kenneth Leonard co-pastor a church in Spartanburg, SC called The Purpose Place. God has used her in music and in business as she is the owner of an eyewear company as well as a plus size athletics company. In 2021 Cobbs-Leonard added mother to her list of titles as her and her husband adopted a beautiful baby boy.

Cobbs-Leonard encouraged all those listening that God is using her as a testament of what is possible. She hopes to inspire the person that is from a small city or town and God has called them to have great impact, that they can do it because God has led her through it.

Cobbs-Leonard commenced the night by singing a medley of her songs while rocking a beautiful green dress made by an Atlanta designer.
