Tennessee is home to country and African American  music and many cultural attractions such as the National Civil Rights Museum, Beale Street Baptist Church, and other historical landmarks.

Now downtown Nashville, Tennessee will be introducing the first ever African American music museum in the “Music City.” There will be over 1,500 artifacts and memorabilia on display from the 1600s up until the present day.

The National Museum of African American Music has been in the making for 20 years and will be opening to the public January 30, 2021.

The 56,000-square-foot venue with seven interactive galleries will be “an anchor tenant within the urban development known as Fifth + Broadway located in the heart of Music City. It is the only museum dedicated to educating, preserving, and celebrating more than 50 music genres and styles that were created, influenced, and/or inspired by African Americans.”

The experience of the museum will give an overview of great moments that have influenced the African American music culture. The museum will take visitors through the West and Central African cultures along with the times of slavery.

The museum will allow visitors to take a journey through the Reconstruction era, Jim Crow, the Great Migration, World War I and II, and the Harlem Renaissance while tracing music ranging from spiritual hymns to blues, jazz, gospel, R&B, and hip-hop.
