Olympic boxer Felix Verdejo has been charged with kidnapping and carjacking resulting in death as well as the intentional killing of an unborn child, according to the Associated Press.

Keishla Rodríguez Ortiz, allegedly Verdejo’s pregnant mistress, was found dead in the San Jose Lagoon back on May 1st. According to Yahoo Sports, she was reported missing last Thursday after not showing up to her pet grooming job.

In a complaint filed by the FBI, Felix Verdejo and an accomplice (identified as a witness in the report) met with Ortiz close to her home on Thursday. There, the complaint alleges that Verdejo punched Ortiz in the face and used a syringe to inject a substance into her body. Then, the boxer and accomplice allegedly tied up the woman’s hands and feet to a heavy block, and threw her off a bridge and into the lagoon. From there, it states that Verdejo fired shots at the woman’s body.

The reported motive has to do with Verdejo and Ortiz’s romantic relationship. According to the victim’s mother Keila Ortiz, she spoke to her daughter on Thursday and was told that Verdejo was meeting up with Keishla to view her pregnancy test results. Keishla Rodriguez Ortiz was reportedly pregnant with Verdejo’s child.

The accomplice turned FBI witness gave the FBI statements which seem to support this motive. He told authorities that the Olympian contacted him to help terminate Rodriguez Ortiz’s pregnancy.

Verdejo’s highly accomplished boxing career is most likely over. He has a current record of 28-2, and once represented Puerto Rico in the Olympics.

If convicted, his charges are death-penalty eligible.
