Chicago Sky’s Candace Parker graces the cover of video game franchise NBA 2K22 making her the first female basketball player to be on the cover. The historic cover will come just in time for the WNBA 25th anniversary special edition when it is released September 10.

The 2K22 WNBA special edition will include an exclusive in-game seven WNBA jersey bundle, featuring Parker, New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu, Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike among others.

“The cover of NBA 2K is such a pivotal platform to inspire young ballers, and I wanted future WNBA stars to know that they can be cover athletes too,” Parker said in a statement.

Parker is currently with the Chicago Sky after spending her previous being with the Los Angeles Sparks for the majority of her career. The two-time MVP is acknowledged as one of the most decorated players in the league, earning a championship with the Sparks in 2016, and six All-Star appearances. She also helped Team USA bring home two gold medals in 2008 and 2012.

“It means a lot to me,” she said. “I’m a fan of basketball. I eat, sleep and breathe basketball. I’m a historian within basketball. I am a fan of basketball. I commentate basketball. I play video games. It was really the perfect storm because there are a lot of other people well-deserving of this, and I know that.”

Parker began her career in the WNBA in 2008 where she became the first player to receive both the MVP award and Rookie of the Year award in the same season that year. In 2016, she led her team to victory in the 2016 WNBA Championship. She’s also a two-time Olympic gold medalist where she has earned a spot in the Tokyo Olympics 2021, Parker will not join the team but will be joining its broadcast team as a basketball analyst during the games.

As this cover involves more WNBA players, hopefully it will bring about WNBA 2K22 as a separate franchise.
