Nia DaCosta makes history as “Candyman” dominates box office

Director Nia DaCosta makes history becoming the first African American female director to debut at No. 1 with Candyman grossing over $22.3 million.

“Candyman” was directed and written by Nia DaCosta and co-written along with Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld. The Jordan Peele-produced project performed above expectations for a horror flick and enjoyed the third-best opening numbers for a final weekend in August.

In 2019, DaCosts became the first Black woman to direct a Marvel film. She will be directing the upcoming “Captain Marvel” sequel, making her the first Black woman to helm a feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The film received an additional $5.23 million from international regions, the film altogether grossed $25 million production budget in its debut weekend.

Nia DaCosta continues to be a force to be reckoned with and a director to watch.
