President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are called to action, on the 49th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, as various states attempt to enact restrictive abortion laws amid the historic court challenges.

Biden and Harris both released statements on January 22nd, the day of the 49th anniversary, proclaiming that Roe v. Wade is “under assault.”

Biden and Harris also claimed the right to an abortion “should be codified into law” beyond the current protections that are provided by the landmark 1973 decision. The Biden-Harris administration plans to continue working with Congress on the Women’s Health Protection Act.

“It is a right we believe, and we pledge to defend it with every tool we possess,” the president’s statement reads.

Reportedly, conservative states such as Texas and Mississippi have directly challenged the historic Roe v. Wade ruling by attempting to restrict any access to abortion providers, while other Democratic-led states are working to preserve access.

“These state restrictions constrain the freedom of all women,” the president’s statement reads. It continues stating “And they are particularly devastating for those who have fewer options and fewer resources, such as those in underserved communities, including communities of color and many in rural areas.”

Biden and Harris paid tribute to Texas lawyer Sarah Weddington who had argued the Roe v. Wade case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The fight is far from over as this administration along with the help of other politicians will need to work collectively to reach common ground.
