Fisk University announced the institute will be the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and the first in the state of Tennessee to have an intercollegiate gymnastics program.

There has always been a demand for the program where thousands of young ladies are interested at HBCUs.

“Women’s gymnastics exemplifies the values of Fisk University: determination, excellence, and a commitment to a more just and equitable future,” Fisk University wrote in a statement. “These values have consistently been at the forefront of women’s gymnastics and Fisk could not be more excited to welcome these remarkable student-athletes to the campus starting this coming fall.”

Although there have been 60 to 70 young women seeking the program, ideally 20-30 young women will be chosen for the first-year program.

The program expected to come in the Fall of 2022, Athletic director Dr. Larry Glover hopes to hire a gymnastics coach within the next few months in order to compete in at least five meets in Division I, II, and III.

Fisk is currently a member of the NAIA and working to secure scholarship funding for the future program.

The institution plans to train the team at the Nashville Gymnastics Training Center. Home meets will take place on Fisk’s campus inside the Henderson A. Johnson Gymnasium and equipment for home meets will be supplied by Meet Authority Productions in Clarksville.

The University plans to host conferences, clinics and invitationals with some of their partnerships organizations, such as Brown Girls Do Gymnastics.
