The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute chose the Met Gala theme for 2023. People are excited to hear that they have decided on a Karl Lagerfeld exhibition.
For those who do not know, the late Karl Lagerfeld was not only a fashion designer but photographer, creative director, and fashion ICON. He was the creative director of the infamous houses of Chanel, Chloe, and Fendi.
The exhibition will be called “Karl Lagerfeld: A line of beauty.” There will be close to 150 looks that all have Lagerfeld’s influence. There will be two guidelines, the refined modern looks he has designed and whimsical romantic designs. Of course, there will be looks spanning over the 60 years he has been in fashion. Some of those looks will include designs from Fendi, Balmain, Chanel, Chloe, and most definitely Karl Lagerfeld.
Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s Wendy Yu Curator in Charge, spoke with Vogue and said, “At its heart, the exhibition will look at the evolution of Karl’s two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional garments. And what’s fascinating to have discovered.”
He said, “I always thought that his drawings were very spontaneous and almost impressionistic. But they were, in truth, extremely precise, almost mathematical. ”
He continued, “We couldn’t see it because we are not trained, but his premiers knew down to the millimeter what each line meant; It was almost a secret code, a language shared between him and those premiers, that only they could fully decipher.”
It will be amazing to see what the past models, entertainers, designers, and socialites who have worked with Lagerfeld will wear for this gala. The Met Gala will be held May 1st, 2023. The exhibition will be available for public viewing from May 5th to July 16th.
