Oprah Winfrey to receive literary honor from PEN/ Faulkner

Oprah Winfrey is receiving the inaugural Literary Champion award from the PEN/Faulkner Foundation. The award will honor her fiction work, championing authors for over twenty-five years.
The PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction is the most prestigious literary award in America since 1981 that honors the best published works of fiction by American permanent residents.
The award is a lifetime achievement prize for contributions to literacy and for inspiring younger readers and writers.
The literary evening will honor Winfrey for her efforts with Oprah’s Book Club where she has over 90 selections of books including recent selection such as “The Way of Integrity: Finding the Path to Your True Self,” by Martha Beck; “Bewilderment,” by Richard Powers; and “The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois” by Honorée Fanonne Jeffers.
Through Oprah’s Book Club, Winfrey has been an advocate for many talented authors and voices since 1996 that ranges from emerging authors to those who are noticeably admired.
“Oprah Winfrey is a literary force field,” PEN/Faulkner board vice president Mary Haft said in a statement Tuesday. “She has been like a lighthouse, standing sentry and shining a beacon of light onto literature and into the lives of writers and readers.”
This year’s literary event will take place virtually on May 2nd, 2022.
