In Kensington, London the Noting hills carnival festival was supposed to happen this past weekend, but because of the coronavirus it was celebrated virtually.
Grammy award-winning artist Adele posted a picture on her Instagram rocking bantu knots and cultural swimwear. “Happy what would be Notting Hill Carnival my beloved London,” She posted with intentions of celebrating West Indian culture. The singers tribute post quickly turned against her.
Journalist Ernest Owens made a statement saying, “If 2020 couldn’t get any more bizarre, Adele is giving us Bantu knots and cultural appropriation that nobody asked for. This officially marks all of the top white women in pop as problematic. Hate to see it.”
Not everyone on social media is bashing her, the pop crave page supported her decision by saying she “looks Stunning”.
Many Users have suggested she remove the photo, comparing her look to Cynthia from Rugrats and making memes mocking her different look.
Even with the reaction from people, users from Jamaica and Africa started commenting positive things. They began to thank her and saw her look as a great representation of the festival. They encouraged her to keep the photo and push for people to understand the context of the cultural carnival. Adele has not addressed the issue on any social media platforms. It doesn’t seem like this pop star will be joining this debate.
