Last week was a rough one for free-agent cornerback Richard Sherman. On Friday, the former Seattle Seahawk plead not guilty to five misdemeanor charges:

  • Driving While Under the Influence
  • Reckless Endangerment of Roadway Workers
  • Criminal Trespass in the Second Degree – Domestic Violence
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Malicious Mischief in the Third Degree – Domestic Violence

On July 14, Sherman was arrested after attempting to break into the house of his in-laws; not long after crashing his vehicle at a Seattle construction site.

According to the Maple Valley Police Department, Richard’s wife Ashley Sherman called and informed them that Richard was intoxicated at their home and had “threatened to hang himself.” A short time after the call, Sherman drove intoxicated to Redmond, Washington, to the home of his wife’s parents.

On the way there, Sherman allegedly crashed into a Seattle construction zone barricade, prompting the construction crew to alert the Washington State Patrol. He would flee the vehicle soon after the accident.

Around 2 AM, Redmond police officers arrived to find the former Superbowl champion yelling and ramming his shoulder into the door of his in-laws, seen in this surveillance footage from NBC News:

In the video, Sherman can be heard screaming for “Ray” to “come through”, referring to Raymond Moss, his wife’s father. Moss would later tell officers he had armed himself with a gun and fired pepper spray at the trespasser.

When the Redmond officers arrived, they attempted to assuage the situation and approach Sherman in a friendly manner, but things escalated when they went to detain him. Officers had to wrestle Sherman to the ground, and he was also bit by a police K-9. Sherman allegedly told the authorities there that he was upset over his children being taken from him, according to the police report.

The cornerback was released without bail on Thursday, and issued a statement via Twitter:

His wife Ashley appeared alongside him at his hearing on Thursday. Regarding the incident, she commented:

“I love and support my husband. I am committed to helping Richard get the support and care that he needs. Richard has always been a loving father and husband. And we are looking forward to seeing him at home with his family.”
