New York born designer, Dapper Dan has made history as the first Black designer to receive the ‘Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement’ Award. The selection was made by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. He is also the first designer to receive the award that has not had a formal runway show.

Dapper Dan’s claim to fame started with his wonderful abilities to repurpose designer fabric and patterns into unique designs. His work has brought him success from the street wearing celebrities but made him an outcast in the luxury designer space. Dapper Dan has proved that he cannot be defeated after being sued due to copyright infringement by the unique way of repurposing branded luxury fabrics he had to close his shop, but the designs did not stop. Nearly three decades later he is a living legend in the luxury space and has even inspired designs by major clothing brands.

Dapper Dan, well his name speaks volumes, and now his accolades do as well. He now joins the previous winners of this award such as Vera Wang, Calvin Klein and others in receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award.
