Former NBA first round pick, Royce White announced his candidacy for Minnesota’s fifth Congressional U.S. Representative seat.

The 16th pick of the 2012 draft walked away from the NBA due to mental health issues and anxiety disorder, which stemmed from his fear of flying. The combination of the NBA schedule and a fear of flying on planes led to him only playing three games for the team and ending his NBA career.

In the fall, the 30 year-old Minnesota native will be running as a Republican where he hopes to turn the tide in his district, which has historically voted Democrat.

“I’m running for Congress because our leaders have sold us out,” he said. “We have to fight for freedom, we have to protect our communities. We have to restore what it means to be an American citizen.”

Democrat Ilhan Omar currently holds the congressional seat since 2019 where he won reelection in November 2020.

Royce White continues to move forward and has received endorsements from many Republican figures including Breitbart founder Steve Bannon and former ESPN NBA analyst Jason Whitlock.
