Harlem’s Fashion Row

Founder of Designers Hub Bethann Hardison spoke at the 3rd Annual Harlem Fashion Row Summit about the state of fashion. She talked about how being in the garment business for years allowed her to see the fashion business evolution.

And while she talked about black designers and how they can get into the industry, she gave awareness of what it means to be in fashion. Though Designers Hub was created in 2018, Hardison has been at it long before.

Hardison started by saying, “It is going out to find the designers.” She recognized that Black designers have always been here. However, they need help with the business portion. She said that Designers Hub helps with just that. They assist in giving them teams that can help them with the business part of fashion.

But she stressed, “The goal is not to make you famous.”

With the industry being tight to get into, it’s hard to work through. Hardison and Designers Hub’s purpose is to get designers through longevity. And just as many designers are putting themselves out there, retailers are also putting themself at risk. Hardison stated, “Designers aren’t traditional anymore.”

She referenced that she believes retailers aren’t going to take designers because they are hot and trending. She referenced in saying, “Retailers are going to be very careful and very thoughtful.” Designers shouldn’t feel bad about getting rejected but get ready for next season.

But Hardison did say this, “I know it’s important to everyone to want to be part of this, but I think so important to also note that if you have a real calling and you’re meant to succeed, you will.”
